To code the impossible code,
To bring up a virgin machine,
To pop out of endless recursion,
To grok what appears on the screen,

To right the unrightable bug,
To endlessly twiddle and thrash,
To mount the unmountable magtape,
To stop the unstoppable crash!

Bridge:

This is my job, to fix the machine!
No matter how hopeless and to do it with glee.
To rewrite the code,
For hours each day,
To be willing to stay late at night without overtime pay!

And I know when it finally runs and it passes the test,
That my boss will be peaceful and calm,
Seein' I've cleaned up this mess.

And the Net will be better for this,
That one man who burned out on the job,
Still coded that last line of Unix,
To code the impossible code!
